Tour Overview

This 18-day birding adventure takes you through Tanzania’s diverse landscapes, from the South Pare and Usambara Mountains to the Uluguru and Ukaguru Mountains. You’ll explore Important Bird Areas (IBAs) and spot a wide range of endemic and rare bird species. The tour includes forest walks, wetland explorations, and highland birding, offering excellent opportunities to see Tanzania’s rich birdlife.

Itinerary

Day 1. TANZANIA BIRDING TOUR:  ARRIVAL AT ARUSHA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, MEET YOUR GUIDE AND TRANSFER TO A GOOD HOTEL

DAY 2 TANZANIA BIRDING TOUR: TRAVEL TO SOUTH PARE MOUNTAINS WITH BIRDS STOP AT NYUMBA YA MUNGU

Early this morning after breakfast, we will drive to South Pare Mountains, first stop will be in Nyumba Ya Mungu Plains, its brush country and its where we try Pink-breasted Lark, Scaly Chatterer, Pringle´s Puffback, White-headed Mousebird, Zanzibar Sombre Greenbul, Pygmy Batis, African Bare-eyed Thrush, Red-fronted Warbler, Tsavo Purple-banded Sunbird, Black-necked Weaver, Southern Grosbeak Canary and Somali Bunting. There are many more widespread and common African species present here such as a good selection of herons & egrets, wildfowls, Augur Buzzard, African Fish-Eagle, Tawny & Long-crested Eagles, Lanner Falcon, Red-bellied Parrot, White-browed Coucal, African Palm & Little Swifts, Von Der Decken’s Hornbill, Red-fronted Tinkerbird, Slate-coloured Boubou, Rosy-patched Shrike, White-browed Scrub Robin, Abyssinian Scimitarbill. Spotted Morning-Thrush, Grassland Pipit, Swahili Sparrow, Yellow-spotted Petronia, Eastern Violet-backed, Hunter’s, Variable & Beautiful Sunbirds, Pale White-eye and Purple Grenadier. After our successful stop here, we will head up the South Pare Mountains later today and look for the endemic South Pare White-eye, along with Hartlaub’s Turaco, Black-fronted Bushshrike, Singing Cisticola, Black-headed & Bar-throated Apalis, African Hill Babbler, Evergreen forest Warbler, Placid Greenbul, Usambara Double-Collared Sunbird, Green-winged Pytilia, and Tsavo Sunbird amongst others. Overnight at Elephant Motel.

Day 3   TANZANIA BIRDS: BIRDING MKOMANZI AREA LATER TRANSFER AND BIRD WEST USAMBARA MOUNTAINS 

First thing this morning we will head to a small woodland just outside Mkomazi National Park, where we will search for species such as Black-throated & D`Arnaud´s BarbetsEastern Black-headed BatisGrey Wren-Warbler, Tsavo, Black-bellied & Hunter´s Sunbirds, Fischer´s Starling, Straw-tailed Whydah and more. Once we’ve finished here we will head to the West Usambara Mountains where we should arrive in time for a late afternoon birding session and possibilities include Blue-capped Cordon-bleuCliff ChatGrey-Olive Greenbul and East Coast Boubou amongst others. Night at Muller’s Lodge.

DAY 4   BIRDING TANZANIA: WEST USAMBARA MOUNTAINS – MAGAMBA FOREST

What an exciting day we have in store with a full day birding in the West Usambara Mountains at Magamba Forest. Major targets for us include Usambara Double-Collared Sunbird, Usambara Akalat, Usambara Weaver, Montane Tiny Greenbul, Usambara Thrush, Red-capped Forest Warbler, Füllebon’s Black Boubou, , Spot-throat, Montane Tiny & Eastern Mountain Greenbul (usambarica race), Usambara Weaver and at dusk we will try for Usambara Nightjar.

There’s plenty of other, more widespread species present here including  Crowned Eagle, Mountain Buzzard, Ayres’s Hawk-Eagle, Olive & Eastern Bronze-naped Pigeons, Lemon Dove, Barred Long-tailed Cuckoo, Hartlaub’s Turaco, Bar-tailed Trogon, Green Barbet, Forest Batis, Grey Cuckooshrike, Black-fronted Bushshrike, White-chested Alethe, Forest (Short-tailed) Batis, Cinnamon Bracken & Evergreen Forest Warblers, Red-capped Forest Warbler, Yellow-throated Woodland Warbler, Eastern Mountain, Placid, Shelley’s, Yellow-streaked and Stripe-faced Greenbuls, Oriole-Finch, Red-faced Crimsonwing and so much more. Night at Muller’s Lodge again.

DAYS 5 – 7 TANZANIA FULL BIRDING TOUR: MAGAMBA FOREST, EAST USAMBARAS AND AMANI 

We will have another morning birding in the fabulous West Usambaras at Magamba Forest to mop up some of the trickier species we still need – maybe Eastern Golden Weaver in the lower areas.  Then we will drive to Amani Nature Reserve in the East Usambara Mountains, swinging by an area to try for Coastal Cisticola and Zanzibar Red Bishop. After a bit of a climb our second main stop of the journey will put us in a good area for species such as Fischer’s Turaco, Mombasa Woodpecker, Green-headed Oriole, Pale Batis, Eastern Nicator, Green Tinkerbird, Fischer’s Greenbul, Black-headed Apalis, Lowland Tiny Greenbul, Little Yellow Flycatcher, Uluguru Violet-backed Sunbird, Usambara Hyliota, Plain-backed Sunbird, Red-tailed Ant-Thrush and Red-headed Bluebill.

Once at our camp site the birding could be fast and furious and there promises to be many new species for us. Over these next couple of days we will search for Banded Green Sunbird, Amani Sunbird, Red-tailed Ant-Thrush, Shelley´s Greenbul, Green-headed Oriole, Usambara Eagle-Owl (unfortunately now lumped in Fraser’s Eagle-Owl), Southern-banded Snake Eagle, Fischer´s Turaco, Green-backed Woodpecker, Usambara Hyliota, Tanzania Illadopsis (now split from Pale-breasted Illadopsis), Southern Yellow White-eye, Moustached Tinkerbird, and Black-bellied Starling.

We will also visit Kwamkoro Tea Plantations for 3 special birds: Kretschmer´s Longbill, Long-billed Forest Warbler, and Sharpe´s Akalat.

Amongst many other possibilities during our stay here we could also see Southern Banded Snake-EagleAfrican Wood OwlTrumpeter HornbillGreen TinkerbirdWhite-eared BarbetScarce Swift,  East Coast Boubou, Chestnut-fronted Helmetshrike, Blue-mantled Crested Flycatcher, Black-and-white Shrike-Flycatcher, Black-headed Apalis, Little Rush Warbler,  Plain-backed & Purple-banded Sunbird and Placid Greenbul, Kenrick’s Starling. The first night will be at Amani Nature Reserve HQ in basic lodge (1400m), followed by 2 nights camping.

DAYS 8 – 9 ARC MOUNTAINS BIRDNG TOUR: BIRDING ULUGURU MOUNTAINS  

The first target of the day is the patchily distributed Böhms Bee-eater, before setting out on the long drive to Morogoro, (stopping for Brown-breasted Barbet around the town), the gateway to the spectacular Uluguru Mountains (2600m), and our base near the village of Tegetero, but the last part of the drive is on a very bad road so progress will be slow. Once we have arrived we will meet our porters and start walking to the campsite, which is around a one and a half hour undulating walk but not too difficult. Once we are settled in to our campsite let the birding begin!

Our main target will be the mega-rare Uluguru Bushshrike, a species only found in the Uluguru Mountains. But it’s a tough species and will take a lot of searching. Other special species in these mountains include Livingstone’s Turaco, the endemic Loveridge’s Sunbird, Bertram’s Weaver, Sharpe’s Akalat, Fraser’s Eagle-Owl, Dark Batis, Uluguru & Shelley’s Greenbul, Orange Ground-Thrush, Spot-throat, White-winged & Chapin’s ApalisStriped Pipit and more.

This area and over the next few days could give us some ‘so-called’ padders to bump up our list such as African Hawk-Eagle, Mottled & African Black Swifts, Cape Robin-Chat, White-eyed Slaty-Flycatcher, Angola Swallow, Trilling Cisticola, Mountain Wagtail, Mountain Thrush and Yellow Bishop to name just a few. 2 nights at campsite.

Day 10:  TZ BIRDINGTOUR AT TEGTERO, LATER ADD BUNDUKI (ULUGURU MOUNTAINS) 

There’s still going to be new birds to find before we pack up the camp and start walking back to where we left our vehicles. Then we will drive to the village of Bunduki on the other side of the mountain and camp again for a night.

Day 11: TANZANIA BIRDING TRIP: BUNDUKI – ULUGURU MOUNTAINS.

We have an exciting morning’s birding in the Bunduki area of Uluguru Nature Reserve. It’s a reasonably tough hike to get to the best patch of forest, which gives us options to look for Winifred’s Warbler, Olive-flanked Gound-Robin, Uluguru Greenbul, Chapin’s Apalis, Dark Batis, Loveridge’s Sunbird, Livingstone’s Turaco and Bertram’s Weaver amongst others. Night at Tanswis Lodge, Mikumi.

Day 12: TANZANIA BIRDING TOUR: BIRDING MIOMBO WOODLANDS

We have a full morning’s birding before driving to the very nice Hondo Hondo Camp for the evening try for the Pel’s Fishing-Owl. Targets today include some great birds such as Speckle-throated Woodpecker, Collared Palm Thrush, Hofmann’s Sunbird, Pale Batis, Cinnamon-breasted Tit, Stierling’s Wren Warbler, Eastern Black-headed Batis, Yellow-bellied Hyliota, Livingstone’s Flycatcher, Long-tailed Fiscal, Miombo Starling and Magpie Mannikin. Night at Hondo Hondo Camp.

Day 13 TANZANIA BIRDING TOUR: BIRDING AT KILOMBERO VALLEY

This morning we will explore the flood plain of the Kilombero River to look for the recently described Kilombero Weaver. In this unique area there’s also the mega rare White-tailed Cisticola and Kilombero Cisticola, both of which have yet to be formerly described. And who knows what else is to be discovered in this remote area. Udzungwa Forest Tented Camp

Other open country and marsh dwellers present include Great White Pelican, Reed Cormorant, several species of heron & egret, Hamerkop, Spur-winged Goose, Black Crake, White-backed & White-headed Vultures, Brown Snake-Eagle, Bateleur, White-crowned & African Wattled Lapwings, Three-banded Plover, African Skimmer, Coppery-tailed Coucal, White-fronted & Little Bee-eaters, Lilac-breasted Roller, Grey-rumped Swallow, Arrow-marked Babbler, Marsh Tchagra, Siffling Cisticola, Red-winged Warbler, Zanzibar Red Bishop and Zebra Waxbill amongst others. We will then return to Hondo Hondo for some easy afternoon birding and will also try to find the stunning Pel’s Fishing-Owl and Lesser Seedcracker.

Day 14: TANZANIA BIRDING TOUR: TRAVEL FROM HONDO HONDO TO UKAGURU MOUNTAINS  

Today is flexible depending on what species we wish to target. But it’s going to be a long drive today to reach our next campsite. 

Day 15: TANZANIA BIRDING TOUR: UKAGURU MOUNTAINS. 

Two very special birds bring us to the seldom-visited Ukaguru Mountains: Rubeho Akalat and Rubeho Warbler. The akalat is highly localised in the understory of primary and secondary montane forest in a narrow range along the Rubeho and Ukaguru (and possibly Uluguru) mountains escarpment between 1800 and 2200 meters. And the rare warbler is only found in the Ukaguru Mountains. Whilst here we could also find Chapin’s Apalis, Moreau´s SunbirdYellow-throated Greenbul, Dark Batis and Red-faced Crimsonwing. Night in Morogoro Hotel.

Day 16:  TANZANIA BIRDING TOUR: TRAVEL TO BABATI TOWN HOPING FOR NOU FOREST BIRDNG THE NEXT DAY. Asmorein Hotel. 

DAY17: TANZANIA BIRDING TOUR: WHOLE DAY BIRDNG AT NOU FOREST. 

Here, you will set out to look for the Mbulu white-eye, Mbulu robin-chat, bar-throated Apalis, Schalow’s Turaco, orange ground thrush, the beautiful Oriole Finch, Eastern double-collared sunbird, and many more. Asmorein Hotel.

Day 18: TANZANIA BIRDING TOUR: TRAVEL BACK TO ARUSHA FOR YOUR RETURN FLIGHT

This 21-day birding safari explores Kenya’s most important birding areas, from coastal habitats to forests, savannas, and wetlands. Expect to encounter hundreds of bird species, including rare and endemic birds, alongside breathtaking landscapes and diverse wildlife.

Itinerary

Day 1: ARRIVAL AT MOMBASA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

Pick Up and Drive and stay close to Malindi Marine National Reserve and Sabaki River Mouth, relax here, set your gadgets ready, walk around a bit! 

DAY 2: BOAT RIDE AND BIRDING AT MALINDI MARINE AND SABAKI RIVER MOUTH. 

The Athi-Galana-Sabaki River is the second longest and one of the two perennial rivers draining into the Indian Ocean in Kenya. The Sabaki River Mouth (SRM) – where the Athi-Galana-Sabaki River pours into the Indian Ocean north of Malindi town in Kilifi County – is an estuary with sandbanks, mudflats, dunes, freshwater pools, marshes and mangroves, presenting a unique ecosystem and habitat for diverse flora and fauna. Look for Common Cuckoo, Yellow Flycatcher, Forbes-Waston’s Swift, Bat-like Spinetail, Reichenow’s Seedeater, Upcher’s Warbler, Barred Warbler, Eleonora’s Falcon, Fischer’s Turaco and more 

Day 3: DRIVE LEISURELY WHILE BIRDING TO ARABUKO SOKOKE FOREST AND BIRD HERE IN THE EVENING. 

More than 230 bird species have been recorded in Arabuko Sokoke Forest Reserve. The area is well known for several globally threatened species, including the Sokoke scops owl and Clarke’s weaver. Other sought-after species that can be seen here include the Sokoke pipit, Amani sunbird and chestnut-fronted helmet-shrike. At Arabuko-Sokoke, Mida Creek and Sabaki Estuary birding spots we search for Crested Guineafowl, Narina Trogon, Green Barbet, Mombasa Woodpecker, Fischer’s Greenbul, Yellow-bellied and Tiny Greenbuls, Violet-backed Starling, Forest Batis, Black-headed Apalis, East-coast Akalat, Eastern Bearded Scrub-Robin, Black-headed Apalis, Northern Brownbul, Terrestrial Brownbul, Pale Batis, Eastern Nicator, Red-tailed Ant-Thrush, Chestnut-fronted Helmet-shrike, Plain-backed Sunbird, Amani Sunbird, Bohm’s Spinetail, Moustached Green Tinkerbird, Sokoke Pipit, Trumpeter Hornbill, Mouse-coloured Sunbird, Scaly Babbler, Southern Banded Snake-Eagle, African Crowned Eagle, Little Yellow Flycatcher, Blue-mantled Crested-Flycatcher, Four-coloured Bush-shrike, Black-bellied Starling,Lizard Buzzard, Malindi Pipit, Gull-billed, Saunders’s Terns, Sooty Gull, Grey Plover, Crab Plover, Bat-Hawk Osprey, Western Reef Heron, Lesser Sandplover, Greater Sandplover, Sanderling, Whimbrel, Eurasian Curlew, Terek Sandpiper, Ruddy Turnstone, Lesser Crested Tern, Northern Carmine Bee-eater, Yellow-throated Longclaw, Zanzibar Sombre Greenbul, Little Yellow Flycatcher African Open-billed Stork, African Spoonbill, Pied Avocet alongside more other species. 

DAY 4: WHOLE DAY ARABUKO SOKOKE AND MIDA CREEK.

The forest boasts of a more than 230 bird species checklist including nine globally threatened species, namely; Southern Banded Snake Eagle, Fisher’s Turaco, Sokoke Scops Owl, Spotted Ground Thrush, Sokoke Pipit, East Coast Akalat, Amani Sunbird, Plain-backed Sunbird, and Clarke’s Weaver. Five of the seven species of the East African coastal forests Endemic Bird Area and twenty-three of the twenty-nine species of the East African coastal biome species that occur in Kenya have been recorded here. At Mida Creek, potential birds are; Collared Palm-Thrush Crab-Plover, Purple-banded Sunbird, Pied Kingfisher, Whimbrel, Terek Sandpiper among others 

DAY 5: TRANSFER TSAVO NATIONAL PARK (TSAVO EAST NATIONAL PARK). 

The biggest national park in kenya and among the top 10 biggest in east Africa. Strategically located between the two capital cities of Kenya- Nairobi and Mombasa, and one of the oldest parks in Kenya with enormous wilderness area that was divided into two sections. i.e. Tsavo east and Tsavo west national parks.

DAY 6: WE SPEND A DAY BIRD WATCHING THIS IMPORTANT AREA; 

We feature all the best spots in Tsavo east. We hope to pocket big and small game, Cut-throat Finch, Golden-breasted Starling, African Bare-eyed Thrush, Irania, Quail-plover, Pangani Longclaw, Abyssinian Scimitarbill, Violet Wood-hoopoe, Southern Ground Hornbill, Spotted Eagle-Owl, Long-crested Eagle, Square-tailed Nightjar, Somali Long-billed Crombec, the Eastern Paradise, Steel-blue, and Straw-tailed Whydahs, Scaly Chatterer, Spotted Eagle-Owl, Spotted Flycatcher, Vulturine Guinea-Fowl, Crested Francolin, Red-chested Cuckoo, Black-cuckoo Shrike, Eurasian and Black-headed Orioles, Gabar Goshawk, Three-streaked Tchagra, Eastern Violet-backed, and Variable Sunbirds, Red-fronted Warbler, Green-winged Pytilia, white-headed and Blue-napped Mousebirds, Sulphur-breasted Bush Shrike, Red-billed and Yellow-billed Oxpeckers, Black-fronted Bush Shrike, Yellow-throated Woodland Warbler, Yellow-bellied and Striped-cheeked Greenbuls, White-starred Robin, the national Taita Thrush, Taita white-Eye, Taita Apalis, Ayres’s Hawk-Eagle, Tawny, Steppe, Imperial, Martial and Wahlberg’s Eagles, Egyptian Vulture, Bateleur, Black-shouldered Kite, Barbary Falcon, the Grey and Common Kestrels, Red-winged Lark, Somali and Temminck’s Coursers, Crested Francolin, white-bellied and Buff-crested Bustard, Somali Ostrich, Olive-Tree Warbler, Red-billed Buffalo Weaver, Northern Pintail, Red-billed Teal, Fulvous Whistling and White-faced whistling Ducks, Common Sandpiper, Collared Pratincole, and many others 

Day 7: BIRDING TRANSFER TO AMBOSELI NATIONAL PARK. 

With the breath taking backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro, comprising of plains, woodlands and rocky thorn bush, great birding experience, elephant and other animals viewing, annual wildebeest migration can also be encountered here.

Day 8: WE SPEND THE WHOLE DAY IN THE FIELD BIRDING FOR AMBOSELI SPECIALITIES.

Taveta Golden Weaver, Long-toed Plover, Red-throated Tit, Collared Pratincole, Fischer’s Sparrowlark, Black-necked Weaver, Fischer’s Starling, Greater Spotted Eagle, Caspian Plover, Yellow-throated Sandgrouse, Black-faced Sandgrouse, Capped Wheatear, Lead-coloured Flycatcher, the skulking Aberdare Cisticola, Golden-winged Sunbird as well as Eastern Double-collared, Tacazze and Malachite Sunbirds, Scarlet-tufted Malachite Sunbird, Alpine Chat, Rufous-breasted Sparrowhawk, Dusky Turtle Dove, Scarce Swift, Cape Wagtail, Cape Robin-Chat, Abyssinian Ground Thrush, Chiffchaff, Hunter’s Cisticola, Mountain Yellow Warbler, Slender-billed Starling and Kandt’s Waxbill, and many more of the 450 species known to occur here

Day 9: BIRDING TO NAIROBI CITY.  

An amazing wildlife and game at the center of Kenya’s Capital-Nairobi! The park is fenced to protect wildlife from direct contact to human. Whereas the southern boundary is open to allow migrating wildlife move between the park and the neighboring Kitengela plains. From big ungulates to the smallest like rodents and chameleons, checklists of over 500species of birds live in the park.

Day10: WHOLE DAY BIRDING IN THE CITY PARK

Look for Von der Decken’s Hornbill, Common Ostrich, Black-headed Heron, Marabou Stork, Egyptian Goose, Black-shouldered Kite, African White-backed Vulture, Augur Buzzard, Tawny Eagle, Helmeted Guineafowl, the beautiful Grey Crowned Crane, White-bellied Bustard, Ring-necked Dove, White-browed Coucal, Rufous-naped Lark, Red-rumped Swallow, Rock Martin and the multicolored Red-and-yellow Barbet, or our first flamingos among many wintering Palearctic shorebirds on Lake Magadi

Day 11: BIRD WATCHING TRANSFER TO CASTLE FOREST (STOP AT SAGANA FOR HINDES BABBLER)  

Reach here and birding in the evening. In Mount Kenya we look for Silvery-cheeked Hornbill, Hartlaub’s Turaco, Rueppell’s Robin-Chat, Mountain Yellow Warbler, and Yellow-crowned Canary. The lodge’s waterhole attracts many mammals including African Buffalo. We’ll spend the early mornings searching for White-starred Robin, Abyssinian Crimson-wing, African Crowned Eagle, African Emerald Cuckoo, and Moustached Green Tinkerbird. A shaded riverside trail may reveal Crowned Hornbill, Mountain Wagtail, and up to eight species of sunbirds, including the stunning Tacazze Sunbird.

Day 14: DRIVE WHILE BIRDING CLOSE TO ABERDARE RANGES AND SLEEP AT NYERI TOWN

DAY15: ABERDARE MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK WHOLE DAY. 

Today we explore the alpine moorland above the tree-line, perhaps encountering Jackson’s Francolins, Aberdare Cisticola, as we climb up into the highest accessible Lobelia-covered plains in Kenya. Our targets here include Alpine Chat and, with luck, we’ll find the specialized and beautiful Scarlet-tufted Malachite Sunbird.

Day 16: TO LAKE NAKURU NATIONAL PARK AND BIRD HERE THE REST OF THE DAY.

Located on the floor of the Great Rift Valley and Kenya’s most popular park, supporting great birdlife including flocks of flamingoes, Pericans, Herons and Storks.

Day 17: BIRDING LAKE NAKURU AND GO TO BARINGO IN THE AFTERNOON. 

We will awaken to vast flocks of flamingos, pelicans, and other water birds. The surrounding woodland holds Narina Trogon, Red-throated Wryneck, Arrow-marked Babbler, and African Firefinch. Later after lunch we drive to Lake Baringo.

Day 18: BIRDING LAKE BARINGO AND GO TO KAKAMEGA AFTERWARDS. 

Lake baringo areas are rich in arid-zone birds, where we search for Hunter’s Sunbird, Heuglin’s Courser, Lichtenstein’s Sandgrouse, and Northern White-faced Scops-Owl. At dusk, we should see Slender-tailed Nightjars gliding along the hippo-covered shore. Today exemplifies birding in Kenya. We begin in the sub-desert and end up in the most eastern tract of lowland equatorial rainforest in Africa. First we visit the cliffs near Baringo, scanning for Fan-tailed Raven, Hemprich’s Hornbill, Mocking Cliff-Chat, and Bristle-crowned Starling. Later we explore the Kerio Valley, where we search rocky, scrubby hillsides for Green- backed Eremomela, Chestnut-crowned Sparrow-Weaver, Brown Parrot, White-crested Turaco, Pearl-spotted Owlet, and Black-headed Gonolek. Proceed to kakamega forest

Day 19: WHOLE DAY BIRDING IN KAKAMEGA FOREST 

Many of Kenya’s fantastic forest birds are available here. These are some of Congo Biome Species and they include; White-chinned and Banded Prinias, Jameson’s and Yellow-bellied Wattle-eyes, Bocage’s and Luehder’s Bushshrikes, Black-billed and Vieillot’s Weavers, Gray-headed Negrofinch, Red-headed Malimbe, and Red-headed Bluebill among others 

DAY 20:  TRANSFER TO MASAI-MARA NATIONAL PARK, BIRDING ON THE WAY

DAY 21: BIRDING AND WILDLIFE AT MASAI MARA. 

The northern portion of the magnificent Serengeti system, offers spectacular vistas over flat-topped acacia and grassy plains riddled with ungulates and other animals. We’ll spend the days in the western part of the reserve looking for East Africa’s famous Lions, Leopards, Cheetahs, African Elephants, gazelles, and other wildlife. However, birding does not take a back seat, and we should be rewarded with views of many large raptors and vultures that gather at the kills, as well as storks, Kori Bustard, Southern Ground-Hornbill, and other species that suffer from disturbance outside these large protected areas. Other highlights may include Rufous-bellied Heron, Saddle-billed Stork, Temminck’s Courser, Sooty Chat, and Schalow’s Turaco.

DAY 22: BIRDING MARA SHORT TIME AND DRIVE TO NAIVASHA TOWN. 

We will spend the early morning at Mara and afternoon at Lake Naivasha Crater Lake Sanctuary, sifting through vast flocks of water birds, and birding productive lakeside woodland. Some of the species expected to see includes the African Fish-eagle, Giant, Pied Kingfishers, Goliath, Purple Herons, Great, Intermediate Egrets, Wood-hoopoes, Bitterns, Lesser swamp, Little-rush Warblers, Squacco Herons, Coots, Grebes, Sandpipers among others 

Day 23. BIRD WALK AT KINANGOP PLATEAU AND EVENING TRANSFER BACK TO NAIROBI TO PREPARE FOR YOUR RETURN FLIGHT BACK HOME. 

At Kinangop grassland, we look for Jackson’s Widowbird, Long-tailed widowbird, Leveillant’s Cisticola, Malachite and Golden Winged Sunbird, Black-backed Duck, Sharp’s Longclaw and a few more

Albertine Rift Birding Tour: Rwanda & Uganda Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali, Rwanda

Arrival at Kigali, Pick up and drive to your hotel for overnight. Relax, introduction and briefing for the albertine rift trip in Rwanda and Uganda

Day 2: Birding in Nyungwe Forest

Transfer birding to Nyungwe Forest. Nyungwe forest is situated in south-west Rwanda between Lake Kivu and the international border with Burundi. This beautiful birding area lies west of Butare, with the Butare-Cyangugu road passing straight through the middle, providing excellent roadside birding. About 270 species have been recorded in Nyungwe, reflecting the wide habitat diversity and altitudinal range. These include all the 25 species of the Albertine Rift mountains Endemic Bird Area that occur in Rwanda, Chapin’s Flycatcher and Rockefellers’ Sunbird (both globally threatened, restricted-range and biome-restricted). Also, 11 of the 23 species of Guinea–Congo Forests biome and 71 of the 74 species of this biome of Afrotropical Highlands that occur in Rwanda have been recorded at this site!

Day 3: Full-Day Birding in Nyungwe (Uwinka Trail)

Whole day birding in the park-Uwinka trail for albertine endemics, lookout for; Stripe-breasted Tit, Purple-breasted Sunbird, Red-throated Alethe, Archer’s Robin-Chat, Ruwenzori Turaco, Great Blue Turaco, Handsome Francolin, Rockefeller’s Sunbird, Miombo Rock-Thrush, Mountain Masked Apalis, Black-faced Apalis, Chestnut-throated Apalis, Collared Apalis, Grauer’s Warbler, Red-faced Woodland Warbler, Kivu Ground-Thrush, White-tailed Blue-flycatcher, Red-chested, SunbirdRegal Sunbird, Olive Woodpecker, Mountain Greenbul, Rwenzori Hill-babbler, Cinnamon Bracken Warbler, Mountain Yellow Warbler, Northern Puffback, White-starred Robin, Rwenzori Double-collared Sunbird, Dusky Crimsonwing, Thick-billed Seedeater, Streaky Seedeater, Cinnamon-chested Bee-eater, Barred Long-tailed Cuckoo etc

Day 4: Transfer to Uganda – Mgahinga National Park

Transfer while birding to Uganda-Mgahinga National Park via Cyanika border. Mgahinga boasts birding with a list of over 180 species of birds and at least 14 Albertine endemics can be seen here. Reach here, early arrival gives a chance to do evening birding around.

Day 5: Full-Day Birding in Mgahinga

Whole day birding in Mgahinga gorilla national park in search for Rwenzori Turaco, Crowned Hornbill, Black Kite and Crowned Crane, Handsome Francolin, Dusky Turtle Dove, Alpine Chat, Kivu Ground Thrush, White-tailed Blue Flycatcher, Lagden’s Bush Shrike, Scarlet-tufted Malachite Sunbird, Montane Double-collared Sunbird. Farmland along the Northern edge of the Park is guarded by a dry stone wall that keeps Buffalo in the Park and out of crops. The trail along the wall is ideal for birding. Along this trail look out for Chubb’s Cisticola, Banded Prinia and Doherty’s Bush Shrike are vocal yet inconspicuous in habitats of tangles at the forest edge whilst Cinnamon-chested Bee-eater, White-eyed Slaty Flycatcher and Mackinnons’s Fiscal favors more exposed perches. Common Stonechat is abundant but here shares the habitat with many of the typical African open-country species: including Wing Snapping Cisticola, Yellow-throated Longclaw, Grassland Pipit, and Yellow Crowned Canary.

Day 6: Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (Ruhija Sector)

Bird watching transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park-Ruhijja Sector. Forest birding in Bwindi ranks the best in Uganda with the best sight guides who use their mouth whistles to mimic the birds. A zigzag drive from the main gate to the lodge through the forest gives a chance to spot a handsome francolin on the roadside plus other birds. 

Day 7: Full-Day Birding in Bwindi (Ruhija – Mubwindi Swamp)

Whole day birding in bwindi impenetrable national park-Ruhijja sector. Today early after our break first, start our day birding the mail trail to mubwindi swanp. The main highlights of this trail is the African Green Broadbill and the Grauer’s Warbler and other birds/or endemics like Chapin’s Flycatcher, Blue-Headed Sunbird, Regal Sunbird, Rockeffeller’s Sunbird, Purple-Breasted Sunbird, Strange Weaver, Dusky Crimson-Wing, Red-Collard Mountain Babbler, Chapin’s Mountain Babbler, Neumann’s’ Warbler, Prigogine’s Greenbul, Black-Faced Apalis, Collard Apalis, Stripe-Breasted Tit, Grauer’s Cukooshrike, Yellow-Crested Helmetshrike, Ruwenzori Batis, Dwarf Honeyguide etc

DayDay 8: Birding Through “The Neck” to Buhoma

Morning birding in the community to try species that we could have missed I the previous day of birding and proceed with our transfer to Buhoma sector of bwindi via the “NECK” several stops will be made on this journey to try several spots for a couple specialties. Even further down on our road, cultivated areas provide feeding opportunities for many seedeaters. Our main targets here will be the highly sought-after Dusky Twinspot and Yellow-Bellied, Black-Headed and Black-Crowned Waxbills. African Stonechat; Streaky and Thick-Billed Seedeaters; African Citril and Cape Canary may also be found here. Noisy Chubb’s Cisticolas will mock us from deep within the bracken! And the beautiful Doherty’s Bushshrike can be lured out from the dense vegetation. Mackinnon’s Shrikes survey the road from high, exposed perches! The NECK,’ another well-known birding locality. Here we will search for species such as Black Goshawk; Bronze-Napped Pigeon; Cinnamon-Chested, Black Bee-Eater; Cassin’s Honeyguide; Petit’s Cuckoo-Shrike; White-Chinned Prinia; the enigmatic Chapin’s Flycatcher; Mountain Wagtail; Pink-Footed Puffback; the rare Tiny Sunbird and the attractive Brown-capped Weaver. We have many chance of seeing the L’heost’s, Red Tailed and the Black and White Colobus Monkey on our journey! There are so many special birds at these elevations that we do not want to rush through, we continue with our drive to Buhoma 

Day 9: Full-Day Birding in Buhoma Sector

Day 10: Optional Gorilla Trekking or Birding in Buhoma

Trekking day for those interested in gorillas, on this day, we set of early, with packed lunch, to the park headquarters for a briefing prior to Gorilla Tracking. The gorillas are gentle animals and it is an unforgettable experience to photograph them as they interact. It is a wonderful experience to stare in to the eyes of these gentle giants; watch them in awe as they play and go about their daily activities. It is indeed a “once in a lifetime” experience that you must never miss! Each encounter is different and has its own rewards; you are likely to enjoy the close view of adults feeding, grooming and resting as the youngster’s frolic and swing from vines in a delightfully playful display. Gorilla tracking involves part or one day in the Impenetrable Forest. Sometimes the gorillas can be located within an hour or so, but at other times it sometimes takes an entire day of quite hard trekking to find them and return, so you need to be physically fit if you wish to maximize your chances. Very occasionally, in spite of all efforts, the gorillas prove elusive. Depending on the time we get back we might have optional village to the communities around the gorillas the pygmies inclusive or evening birding around the self-guided train in Buhoma, another Eden of birding in Uganda and later transfer to our lodge for dinner and overnight (the trip could end here and return back to Kigali for the flight back home) or take some days further through queen Elizabeth national park for some interesting savanna species

Day 11: Birding in Queen Elizabeth National Park

Birding in queen Elizabeth national park (find the lions of Ishasha sheltering from the fierce rift valley sun on the boughs of ancient fig trees!). Early after breakfast we depart birding to queen Elizabeth national park through kanungu area where chances abound to trace for rarity of Rufous-Breasted Wryneck in this area, continue birding to the southern sector of queen Elizabeth where we can’t miss the likes of Whinchats, Greater Scimitarbill, Black Kit, Superb Sunbird, still on a way in ishasha area Little Button, Blue, Common, Harlequin Quails skulk in short grasses along the way. A couple of mammals like Cape Buffalo, Lions, Elephants, Uganda Kobs, Waterbacksetc thrill in this area.

Day 12: Birding and Boat Cruise at Kazinga Channel

From early morning, birding in queen Elizabeth national park and evening boat cruise at Kazinga Channel. In this morning we try for Broad Tailed Warbler, Martial Eagle, Verreaux’s Eagle-Owl, Amur Falcon, Striated Heron, African Spoonbill, Water Thick-Knee, Three-banded Plover, Marsh, Green, Wood and Common Sandpiper, Plain Martin, Lesser Swamp-Warbler, White-Winged Warbler, Caruther’sCisticola, Black-Headed Gonolek, Papyrus Gonolek, Red-Faced Cisticola, Red-Chested Cukoo, Northern Puffback, Tropica Boubou, Diederik, Klaas’s, African-Emerald Cukoos, Little Stint, Yellow-Throated Long-Claw, East-African Swee, Common Waxbill, Crimson-Rumped Waxbill, and Yellow-billed Ox-pecker etc. mammals include; Olive Baboon, Valvet Monkey, in the kyambura gorge we find the Chimps, Blue and Red Tailed Monkey etc. evening we take boat ride at kazinga channel.

Day 13: Transfer to Entebbe – Mabamba Swamp for Shoebill

Stop at Mabamba Swamp to search for the Shoebill before heading to the airport for departure.

Day 1: Arrival – Entebbe Botanical Gardens

Early arrivals will give a chance for birding at Entebbe botanical gardens located on the northern part of Lake Victoria. The gardens harbor a collection of tropical, sub-tropical and temperate plants and shrubs which regenerate over the years. The place is a habitat of a large array of about 250 bird species. One of a few remaining productive wetland in Uganda protected by the local communities. extensive papyrus swamps with labyrinth’s channels and lagoons, classified as an important bird area (IBA), it’s a home of multiple Shoebills-Uganda’s most famous avian resident and the only representative in its family, is the amongst most sought after birds in the whole African continent! DAY 3: BIRDING TO MURCHISON FALLS NATIONAL PARK THROUGH MASINDI TOWN

After breakfast we depart for Murchison falls national park stopping at Masindi town for lunch. Murchison falls national park is the largest and oldest game park of all the parks in Uganda. It lies at the northern end of the Albertine rift valley hosting 76 species of mammals and about 460 bird species, the park is famous of its worlds powerful falls which appear along an area just 6m wide! It is dominated by vast palm-dotted savanna and forest patches in the south. Special birds there include among others; Red-throated Bee-Eater, Northern carmine Bee-Eater, Crested Francolin, Black-faced Waxbill, Marsh Tchagra, Northern Red bishop, Black-winged Red Bishop, Namaqua Dove, Wire-tailed Swallow, White-browed-sparrow Weaver, Cliff Chart, Abyssinian Ground Hornbill, , Senegal Coucal, Silverbird, Standard Winged Night-Jar, Yellow-billed Duck, Black-headed Lapwing, Golden-backed Weaver, Green-winged Pytilia, Shoebill, African Fish Eagle, Black Kite, Black-shouldered Kite, Buff-bellied Warbler, Abyssinian Roller, Speckle-fronted Weaver, Chestnut-crowned Sparrow-weaver, Pennat-winged Night-Jar, White-rumped Canary, etc.

We leave early with our packed lunch for morning game drive into the park birding towards the Nile ferry within the Borassus savanna where we will also encounter a variety of Antelopes, Elephants, Cape Buffalos, Giraffes, Lions and Leopards, Jackson’s Heart-beasts among others. In the afternoon we have a launch cruise to the bottom of the falls where a variety of water and special birds will be seen such as Rock Pratincole, Northern Carmine Bee-Eater, Red-Throated Bee-Eater, White-Crested Turaco, Vinaceous Dove, Beautiful Sunbird, Red-Winged Warbler, Senegal Thick-Knee, Grosbeak Weaver, Bruce’s Green-Pigeon, Chestnut-Crowned Sparrow-Weaver, Spotted Morning-Thrush, Osprey, Bar-Breasted Firefinch, Black-Headed Gonolek, Pel’s Fishing-Owl, Yellow-Fronted Tinkerbird, Red-Necked Francolin, Little Bittern, Namaqua Dove, Little Sparrow-Hawk, Senegal Thick-Knee, Bat Hawk, Heugln’s Francolin, Blue Spotted Wood Dove, Black-Billed Wood Dove, Swallow Tailed Eee-Eater, Madagascar Bee-Eater, Siffling Cisticola, Singing Cisticola, Yellow-Mantled Widowbird, Olive-Bellied Sunbird, African Quailfinch, Cabanis Bunting Etc.   

DAY 5: BIRDING TO BUDONGO CENTRAL FOREST RESERVE

Budongo forest is one of the largest natural forests in Africa, home of a combination of vegetation and tree species found elsewhere in forests of Africa and has the most challenging bird species some skulk on the tree canopies which calls for kin observation with a kin ornithologist! Birding through Kanyiyo Pabidi area will give a chance to see rare species like puvel’s Illadopsis. In Budongo, we shall be looking for; Crested Malimbe, Red-Headed Malimbe, Lemon Bellied Crombec, Rufous-Crowned Eremomela, Black-Eared Ground-Thrush, Black-Throated Apalis, Black-Caped Apalis, Buff-Throated Apalis, Green Hylia, Nahan’s Francolin, Hairy-Breasted Barbet, Yellow-Spotted Barbet, Yellow-Billed Barbet, Western Black-Headed Oriole, Yellowbill, Brown-Eared Woodpacker, Yellow-Crested Woodpacker, Chocolate-Backed Kingfisher, African Dwarf, Shining Blue, Blue-Breasted Kingfisher, Yellow Longbill, African Crowned-Eagle, Forest Flycatcher, Yellow-Browed Camaroptera, Grey-Backed Camaroptera, Yellow-Mantled Weaver, Red-Heaed Bluebill, Sabines Spinetail, Casin’s Spinetail, Red-Tailed Anti-Thrush, Cameron Sombre, Slender Billed, Wilcock’s Honeyguides, Jameson’s Wattle-Eye, Blue-Throated Brown Sunbird, Little-Green Sunbird, Uganda Woodland Warbler, Rufous Flycatcher-Thrush etc.

DAY 6: WHOLE DAY BIRDING IN THE ROYAL MILE – BUDONGO CENTRAL FOREST RESERVE

Early after breakfast, carry our picnic lunch and drive a short distance from the hotel that take us to one of the best birding spots in Uganda the royal mile and busingiro forest. The name reveals the African historical leisure spot for the traditional king of Bunyoro. At the mile, the forest being a bit dense, the trail lining was cleared to make a perfect view with good light for the bird photographs. And later after our excellent birding we get back to the hotel for refreshment, dinner and overnight.

DAY 7: TRANSFER TO KIBALE CHIMPANZEE FOREST

Morning after breakfast, with our packed lunch, we depart for Kibale national park. It will be quite a long distance with numbered stops for stretching and look at birds. Early arrivals will give a chance to do evening birding around the hotel. This primarily forest park is not only the best place to track chimpanzees, but also its greatest primate diversity and a thrilling variety of forest birds!

DAY 8: BIRDING AND OPTIONAL CHIMPANZEE TRACKING

(divided day; Birding and Chimp Tracking)

Wake up early and start birding along the roadside from the hotel to Bigodi sanctuary or wake up early at 5:00am and prepare ourselves for the most sought bird the Green-breasted Pitta! Thereafter we continue normal birding getting out from the forest to our hotel for lunch break. In the afternoon drive to the park visitor center for briefing and Chimp tracking. Kibale is a home of 13 primates and about 375 bird species. Primates include; L’Hoest’s Monkey, Red Colobus Monkey, Bush Baby, Olive Baboon, Red-Tailed Monkey, Grey-Cheeked Mangabey, Black And White Colobus, Blue Monkey, Chimpanzee etc. and a long list of sought bird species like; Afep Pigeon, Red-Winged Francolin, Narina Trogon, Bar-Tailed Trogon, Black-Billed Turaco, Black Bee-Eater, White-Headed Wood-Hoopoe, Yellow-Rumped Tinkerbird, African Pitta, Velvet Mantled Drongo, Petit’s Cukoo Shrike, African Broad Bill, Wilcock’s Honeyguide, White-Spotted Flufftail, Western Nicator, White-Tailed Anti-Thrush etc.

DAY 9: BIRDING TO QUEEN ELIZABETH NATIONAL PARK

QUENP “Medley of wonders” is the second largest national park after Murchison, it’s a home of over 600 species of birds! Therefore, it’s one of the reason why this park is ranked among the best birding destinations in Africa. The park name was after the Queen of England’s visit in 1954. Common Scimitarbill, Whinchat, Spurb, Bronzy, Olive-Bellied, Marico, Purple-Banded, Orange-Tufted, Scarlet-Chested, Beautiful, Red-Chested Sunbirds, Three-Banded Plover, Caspian Plover, Kittlitz’s Plover, Red-Caped Lark, Brown Babbler, Temminck’s Courser, Northern Wheatear, Black-Winged Pratincole, White-Tailed Lark, Mosque Swallow, Black-Bellied Bustard, Little Swift, Harliquin Quail, Button Quail, White-Winged Warbler, Verreaux’s Eagle-Owl, Ovampo Sparrowhawk, Secretarybird, Caruther’s Cisticola, African Skimmers, Black-Headed Gonolek, Papyrus Gonolek, Red-Faced Cisticola, Red-Chested Cukoo, Northern Puffback, Tropica Boubou, Diederik, Klaas’s, African-Emerald Cukoos, Little Stint, Temminck’s Stint, African-Wood Owl, Black-Shouldered Night-Jar, Yellow-Throated Long-Claw, East-African Swee, Common Waxbill, Crimson-Rumped Waxbill, Fawn-Brested Waxbill, Zebra Waxbill, Village Indigobird etc.

DAY 10: WHOLE DAY BIRDING IN QUEEN ELIZABETH NATIONAL PARK

Early after breakfast we leave the hotel for game drive. We’ll have a change to see a number of birds and mammals like Giant Forest Hog, Elephants, Bush Bucks, Water Bucks, Wart Hogs, Baboons, Uganda Cobs etc. early afternoon have our lunch and get ready for the afternoon launch cruise along the great Kazinga channel. Along this channel, you’ll have about 4 to 5KM boat ride that is rich in savanna and water birds as well as a plenty of mammals! On your ride, you’ll be guided by a well knowledgeable site guide and he/she will be in position to help you in all means concerning the wilderness of this park. 

DAY 11: BIRDING AND WILDLIFE GAME DRIVE AT ISHASHA AS WE CONNECT TO BWINDI NATIONAL PARK 

This area is key and most famous of tree climbing lions, but its also the best birding area to spot a few savanna speciest that youcould have missed in your previous day birding tour. You will later drive to Bwindi National park for overnight at Buhoma Sector.

DAY 12: GORILLA TRACKING (OPTIONAL ACTIVITY)

Morning after breakfast you report to park headquarters for briefing prior to gorilla tracking excursion. This activity may take anywhere between one to eight hours so a reasonable degree of fitness is required. Gorilla tracking is a remarkable experience to stare in the eyes of these gentle giants, watch them as they play, and go about their daily activities. Its indeed “once in lifetime” experience that you must never miss! Each encounter is different and has own rewards! But you’re likely to enjoy the close view of adults feeding, grooming and resting as the youngsters’ frolic and swing on the vines in a delightful display. Since this activity takes anywhere between 3 – 6 hours, you will then join evening birding at the entrance of this park or drive to Ruhija through the “NECK” searching for; Red-Throated Alethe, Archer’s Robin-Chat, Yellow Eyed Flycatcher, Chapin’s Flycatcher, Blue-Headed Sunbird, Regal Sunbird, Rockeffeller’s Sunbird, Purple-Breasted Sunbird, Strange Weaver, Dusky Crimson-Wing, Red-Collard Mountain Babbler, Chapin’s Mountain Babbler, Grauer’s Warbler, Neumann’s’ Warbler, Prigogine’s Greenbul, Black-Faced Apalis, Collard Apalis, Stripe-Breasted Tit, Grauer’s Cukooshrike, Red-Billed Helmet Shrike, Ruwenzori Batis, African Green Broadbill, Dwarf Honeyguide, Prigogin’s Nght-Jar, Albertaine Owlet, Congo Bay-Owl, Ruwenzori Turaco, Handsome Francolin and other birds.

DAY 13: WHOLE DAY BIRDING ON THE MAIN TRAIL TO MUBWINDI SWAMP 

Forest birding in Bwindi ranks the best in Uganda with the best sight guides who use their mouth whistles to call birds. At the main trail we bird all the way to Mubwindi swamp and the specials to look at are; Chapin’s Flycatcher, Blue-Headed Sunbird, Regal Sunbird, Rockeffeller’s Sunbird, Purple-Breasted Sunbird, Strange Weaver, Dusky Crimson-Wing, Red-Collard Mountain Babbler, Chapin’s Mountain Babbler, Grauer’s Warbler, Neumann’s’ Warbler, Prigogine’s Greenbul, Black-Faced Apalis, Collard Apalis, Stripe-Breasted Tit, Grauer’s Cukooshrike, Yellow-Crested Helmetshrike, Ruwenzori Batis, African Green Broadbill, Dwarf Honeyguide etc

DAY 14: BIRDING TO LAKE MBURO NATIONAL PARK

After breakfast we depart for lake Mburo national park, it’s on a distance of about 400KM from Kisoro-Bwindi therefore our drive takes more hours of our day having strategic stops to stretch our legs and look at birds.

DAY 15: EARLY BIRDING AND AFTERNOON BOAT CRUISE IN LAKE MBURO NATIONAL PARK

While in the park we shall look out for birds like; African-Grey Hornbill, Black-Loward Babbler, Red-Headed Weaver, Greater Blue-Eared Starling, Trilling Cisticola, Green-Wood Hoopoe, Brown-Chested Lapwing, Scaly-Throated Honeyguide, Lesser-Masked Weaver, White-Backed Vulture, Tabora Cisticola, Crestd-Spurfowl, Red-Faced Barbet, Little Bee-Eater Etc. And Mammals Like the Zebra, Eland, Topi, Impala, Cape Buffalo, Warthog etc. today we target the boat ride along lake Mburo where we hardly miss African Finfoot, White Backed and Black Crowned Night Heron, Giant Kingfisher. A night drive always produces good views of Black Shouldered, Northern Tanzania Fiery Necked Nightjar, Nocturnal Mammals and Bush Babies.

Day 16: Transfer to Entebbe & Departure

Return to Entebbe with birding stops along the way before departure.
