This 7-day Kenya Birding Tour takes you through some of the country's best birding destinations. You will explore forests, savannas, lakes, and highlands while spotting unique birds and enjoying Kenya’s diverse wildlife. The tour includes guided bird walks, game drives, and hikes in Important Bird Areas.
Itinerary
Morning meet your professional birding guide (do an optional short game drive in Nairobi National Park) and drive to Mt Kenya National Park-Castle Forest, a detour and hot lunch at Sagana Village for the endemic Hinde’s Babbler, and thiba river crossing and you join Castle Forest Area is Key to spot the African Giant Kingfisher and the Illusive Olive Ibis plus other many forest birds to look at. Early arrival, add birding walk from the gate to the lodge.
Morning after breakfast, with your picnic lunch, birding hike from the lodge to the waterfall, afternoon birding the main trail joining Mt Kenya. Birds to look for are; Kandt’s Waxbill, Abyssinian Ground Thrush, Orange Ground Thrush, Narina Trogon, Bar-tailed Trogon, Black-faced Apalis, Hurtlaub’s Turaco, Red-fronted Parrot and other more forest specialties.
Early after breakfast, transfer to Samburu County with several stop on the way to scan around for birds, and scenic landscapes. Hot lunch stop will be at Isiolo Town. This afternoon you may decide to go to Ndomoru Camel Village to search for the Endemic William’s lark in the dry plains of Shaba, or do evening game drive in Shaba/Buffalo Springs National reserves. A short game drive is fruitful in special birds like; Lichtenstein’s Sandgrouse, Vulturine Guineafowl, Crested Guineafowl, Yellow-bellied Eremomera, Donaldson’s Sparrow Weaver, White-browed Buffalo weaver, Eastern Violet-Backed Sunbird, Parrot-billed Sparrow, African Silverbill, Secretary Bird, and more dry country and savanna species. These parks also are home of special mammals like Grevy’s Zebra, Gerenuk, Reticulated Giraffe, Beisa Oryx and others like African Elephant, Impalas, Baboons etc.
Hike Mt Ololokwe in Samburu County looking for specialties in this area. At the top of Ololokwe, you will be hosted by different kinds of Vulture like Ruppel’s Griffon, African White-backed vulture, Hooded Vulture, and Egyptian Vulture which usually sore around this mountain. Other special birds here include; Stone Patriage, Stripe-breasted Seed-eater, Bristle-crowned Starling, Marico Sunbird, Yellow-billed Hornbill, Jacksons Hornbill, Vondadicken’s Hornbill and other more
Transfer to Naivasha Town. Today being a quite long journey, you will wake up early for breakfast, carry along with your picnic lunch and drive to Naivasha area with several stops on the way to try our renowned special bird spots. Early arrival, you will do a bird walk around Naivasha Crater Lake Sanctuary to search for Coqui Francolin, Scaly-throated Honeyguide, Superb Starling, Mountain Grey woodpecker, Streaky Seed-eater, Chinspot Batis, Fork-tailed Drongo, African Black-headed Oriole, Hammerkop, and many more. Mammals like Waterbuck, Bushbuck, Zebras, and other different small mammals like Sun squirrels, side-striped squirrels can’t be missed.
Birding walk and hikes in Aberdare National Park for special birds like Aberdare cisticola, scarlet-tufted Sunbird, Tacazze Sunbird, Hunter’s Cisticola, Hartlaub’s Turaco, Jackson’s Spurfawl, Mountain Buzzard, Rufous-breasted Sparrowhawk, White-headed wood-hoopoe, Abyssinian Crimsonwing, Greater blue-eared starling, to mention but a few
Morning birding walk at Kinangop plateau-Morongaru Conservation area. and afternoon drive back to Nairobi (Evening return flight) Kinagop is special for birds like; Sharp’s Long-claw, Yellow-throated long-claw, Jacksons Widowbird, Long-tailed Widowbird, Golden-winged Sunbird, Variable Sunbird, African Snipe, Egyptian Goose, Little Grebe, Augar Buzzard, Three-banded Plover, Red-Knobbed Coot, and a few more. From here, you will drive strait back to Nairobi.
